FAQ

Frequently asked questions - everything you want to know but were previously afraid to ask!
You have some questions? We have some answers!
Q: What is Rainbow Golfers?
A: We're a Sydney based inclusive and friendly golf group for LGBTIQ+ people and their friends and family. We provide a friendly and fun way to engage in a mutually loved (and occasionally not liked) sport.

Q: Do I need to be a good golfer to take part?
A: No. We welcome golfers of varying abilities. We have golfers who are passionate about competition and their game and others who play to improve. We all play for the exercise, enjoyment, camaraderie, and scenery. We can pair you up with other golfers like yourself. The great thing about golf is it a great leveller and can be played socially or competitively with or without handicaps.  We do ask that you have had some practice on a driving range and/or on a golf course before joining us and that you are prepared to learn and follow golf etiquette.

Q: Where and what are the courses that you play?
A: We have a few favourite courses around Sydney, but we play a range of courses around the Sydney greater metropolitan region and environs. We occasionally have a weekend golfing trip.

Q: When do you play?
A: We play Fridays and Sundays, and you are welcome to play as often or as infrequently as you wish. Occasionally people may meet up for additional games. Once you join all games, times and suggestions are posted on our WhatsApp chat.

Q: Do I have to have clubs and a buggy?
A: No, you can hire clubs, buggies, and carts at the courses we play. Clubs and buggies can be expensive to purchase but you can also get clubs and buggies at good prices on eBay and Gumtree.

Q: Are there social activities if I join the club?
A: We always have a drink at the 19th. We organise the occasional weekend away and may have a dinner or theatre night for those that are interested from time to time. Our focus is on playing golf and then enjoying a drink afterwards.

Q: I'm a Lesbian, Queer or Trans woman or Trans man or am Bisexual - is the club for me?
A: Absolutely. We are an inclusive and open club with the goal to ensure golf is a safe and fun activity for all members of our community. We only ask that you have some experience at playing golf and have had a bit of practice at the driving range or on the golf course and are prepared to follow golf etiquette. If you would like to join us and have some golfing experience, we can introduce you to some members who will make you feel welcome.

Q: Am I too old or too young to join Rainbow Golfers?
A: Everyone is very welcome. We have golfers of all ages and abilities. It's a great way to meet people from a wide spectrum of the LGBTIQ+ community.
.
Q: What can I expect from the games played on Friday and Sunday?
A: Friday games are fun with 1 “Mulligan” allowed. Sunday games are also fun and some of us play competitively in our Sunday games. We sometimes run a Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competition – with a small prize which is funded by the entry fee to the “competition”.

Q: Are there other games played during the week?
A: Sometimes our members play on other days.

Q: Should I tell you that I'm coming along to a game?
A: We have to book tee times in advance, so yes you need to let us know. Once you join us you are connected to our WhatsApp group and that is where: we advertise tee times, seek suggestions for courses; and advise of other events. We ask that you let us know if you can’t make it as this frees tee times up for others or allows us to give the golf club the courtesy of letting them know actual numbers before teeing off.

Q: Are there membership fees?
A:  Currently there are no fees with Rainbow Golfers. Golf can be a cheap or very expensive game depending on equipment and course fees. We play on a range of courses, so fees vary, and we do look for deals.

Q: Is there a dress code?
A: Basically yes. The dress code is whatever the codes is for the course we are playing. Some courses are stricter on dress codes. It is fair to say that dress codes have been substantially relaxed on most golf courses in recent years.

Q: Can I bring friends or family along?
A: Yes. Anybody who is accepting of our core values of LGBTQI+ inclusiveness is welcome to play with us.

Q: Do you offer coaching?
A: No. While members with some ability are always happy to provide guidance we do not offer coaching per se. We certainly recommend coaching for improving your game and can recommend coaches that we have used ourselves. We are certainly happy to provide tips on etiquette to help you understand and enjoy the game more.

Q: Do I have to have a handicap or be a member of a golf club?
A: No we can help you obtain or maintain a handicap and or offer advice on joining a club, but neither are necessary to play in our group.
